Rudraksha or Rudraksh is a holy bead prepared into malas and worn by Hindus. These malas are believed to possess special powers to drive away grief and bring happiness. Rudraksha is a derivative of two Sanskrit words - “Rudra” and “Aksha,” the former word represents “Lord Shiva,” while the latter “Eyes.”
Long time ago Demon Tarakasura’s sons Tadinmali, Tarakaksh and Kamalaksh worshipped Lord Shiva and attained divinity, but resorted to their evil ways after gaining divine powers. After a long meditation Lord Shiva woke up with great fulfilment, but shed tears when he saw the misdeeds of demons. He destroyed Tarakasura’s sons and brought peace to the earth. On the place where Lord Shiva’s tears fell a tree grew which came to be known as Rudraksha. Rudraksha tree bore Rudraksha “mani”s or beads, which were used by Hindus as malas during “japa”s (repetitive prayers).
Rudraksha “mani”s are believed to possess divine powers providing peace and happiness to the wearer. It is also said that Rudraksha malas helped the sanyasis identify pure water from impure by rotating clockwise or anticlockwise when held above it.
Lord Shiva face - Mukhis Rudraksha
Grooves or furrows developed on the dried Rudraksha surface may resemble faces resembling Lord Shiva’s face (mukhi), but completely developed mukhis are the ones that demand huge price. Rudraksha “mani”s vary based on the number of faces which may have 1 - 38 mukhis, each having different powers. But in general only 21 mukhis are found.
Indra mala/Rudraksha mala
Rudraksha mala are believed to possess electromagnetic, paramagnetic and influencing powers providing scientific, medical and spiritual advantages. They are also called ad Indra malas.
Certain mukhi in Rudraksha manis are found to possess specific amount of electrical resistance which works in rhythm with heart and brain, releasing brain chemicals that benefit the health. It is found that this electric power can be measured in Ohms.
Wearing Rudraksha is said to provide relief from health problems related to heart disease, blood pressure, hypertension, insomnia, depression, and alcoholism.

Rudraksha trees are found in the foothills of Himalayas, near Ganga river, Nepal, Indonesia, New Guinea, and many other parts of the world of that geographical stretch.
